Feraland is a family company, owned and run by Jasmine and Pete McGarr.

After successful careers in London’s creative industry, they settled in Sussex in 2013.

Jasmine leads the garden antiques side of Feraland, which sources and recovers artefacts from across Europe.

Pete is a qualified landscape designer and merges 20 years of applied experience in the creative process, with a knowledge of local resources and wild landscapes.

Extended periods of wet weather can be difficult for gardens with heavy soil, making them unusable for long spells of the year.

Here is a design solution for such a garden; using boardwalks, a dry stream leading to a bog garden with the excavated soil broken up and reused in hügelkultur beds*, for well draining and drought tolerant vegetable plots.

Playful areas for the kids are set above ground in towers and playhouses.

Every garden has its challenges, the secret is to work with the conditions and this will lead you to the landscapes that naturally evolve and give you ideas that fit and make the most of your space, without having to fight it.

*Hügelkultur beds are mounds created using logs and twigs at the base and covered with soil and compost for a growing layer. The wood absorbs water that is released in dry periods and provides long term nutrients to the soil.
